Green Data Center

A data center is the house of integrated system of computers, telecommunications and storage devices wherein data is stored. Typically, a data center consists of backup power supplies, surplus data communications connections, air conditioning system, various security devices, fire and smoke detecting devices. Big data centers can consume huge amount of power. It is not only costly but also it can pollute air by exhausting smoke of fuel which is burnt in diesel generator to generate power for the data center.

So, we can realize the environmental impact of a data center. We can make data centers more cost effective and minimize environmental hazard by introducing some green techniques. These green techniques are as below :

Data center infrastructure management

Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) can help taking following decisions:
  • Monitoring, locating and managing all physical assets of entire infrastructure with a merge view.
  • Automating the commissioning of new equipment.
  • Minimizing power consumption, energy costs and carbon footprint.
  • Automating the capacity planning with unparalleled predicting capabilities.
  • Arranging IT to the requirements of the business and upholding the arrangement.

Natural air cooling system :

Natural or free air cooling is the process of exploiting outside air to cool data center facilities instead of using huge power consuming air conditioning units. Now a days, data center service providers are creating racks and servers which is capable to run in the temperatures up to 27°C. In this scenario, natural air cooling will be a significant choice. In order to get natural cool air, it is necessary to keep the windows of data center just open. Dust particles can damage server equipment of data centers. In order to catch these dust particles, filters are required in data centers. Filtered air should meet the required level of humidity. Natural air cooling system is very effective for data centers in terms of environmental and economic prospects. As a result, companies are gradually applying this technique in their data centers.

Combined virtual data center

Virtual software enhances the efficiency of existing servers which helps to decrease the power consumption indeed. This approach can help enterprises rationalizes IT resources and exploit the unused processing power of high power storage devices and servers. Combining virtual software, specialized servers and high bandwidth network connection can reduce capital costs of data center and also increase energy efficiency.

Energy efficient servers

Using energy efficient servers in the data center is very significant. Because. they can help to reduce direct electricity costs of IT as well as operating and capital costs of cooling facilities.

Utilizing renewable energy

Large business organizations can utilize renewable energy like solar and wind to power their data centers. It can assist managers to meet environmental requirements.

Cloud computing

Cloud computing can contribute in your efforts of creating green IT. Because, a cloud computing provides maximum exploitation of your CPU (Central Processing Unit). It is the sharing of spare resources between two users or organizations as per their requirement.

Modular data centers

These data centers are portable. It is designed for rapid placement, high density and energy efficiency. These are ready made data center in a box which can be scrambled very swiftly.

Data center industries are now concentrating to create their data centers green indeed. Researchers have established a technique to enclose electronics in a fluid to remain circuits effective even at higher temperatures. High efficient coolers can reduce its Carbon footprint. In order to confirm that only necessary modules are in service, it monitors requirements of power of loads. Other modules stays in a low power standby mode. It contributes to save huge amount of money of data centers.
